In a QR code, data is stored on two dimensions. The amount of information to be stored can be increased multiple times in contrast to consecutive barcodes. This code can be read with the Smartphone and a QR code scanner application. The data matrix code, another type of coding, is also suitable for certain applications such as serialisation. The QR code can serve as a basis for serialisation.
Both code types are readable with standard applications, in order to receive the serial number in plain text or for forwarding it to a website. To access database content, such as a real-time authenticity test, special applications are required.
